In this cartoon the gas pedal stands for spending. The size of spending. The heavy spending foot is also huge compare to the person. This means that the spending is larger than it needed to be. The quote "I wish i knew why the U.S. debt is suddenly accelerating" shows that the congress don't know how fast they're spending the money. Although you need to spend money to solve the economical situation we're in now, the deficit spending without any result, shown by increase in unemployment rate and the result of the economic stimulus package, during a short period of time will only lead the country into a worst situation. What this cartoon's trying to say is that the congress is spending the money in a large quantity, but they don't even notice, or they don't want to admit, that they're leading the country into a heavy debt.
