In the political cartoon pictured above, we see an apprehensive looking astronaut in space holding a marker in one hand and papers, one of which says “OBAMA BUDGET: MOON PROGRAM AXED”, in the other hand. The astronaut used the marker in his other hand to write a “D” over the S in NASA, changing the acronym to NADA. The cartoonist is saying that if Obama’s Budget is passed, the program that is supposed to send astronauts back to the moon in 2020 will be cut. By writing a “D” over the “S”, NASA now reads as NADA. NADA (nothing) is what NASA is receiving, in term of funding. The D can also symbolize the Democratic Party, which President Obama is a part of. Although exploration of the moon may help us in the uncertainty of the future, the budget’s new focus on old ideas, such as taxes and unemployment, will have a more direct impact in restoring confidence due to the current economic crisis. New findings from the moon are very interesting and they bring a new insight back to our world. However, the billions of dollars that were intended to be spent on NASA will help out more people, given that Congress approves the budget, since it will be distributed towards the Pell Grant, Elementary and Secondary Education, airport screening machines, tax breaks, and other important issues. The addition to the Pell Grant will be especially useful since it will help pay for my college tuition.
