Appositives and appositive phrases are, functionally, nouns. They clarify nearby nouns, as in the following sentence:
Jason, our next-door neighbor, brought band-aids and medicine to help fix my thumb.
The appositive phrase in that sentence, "our next-door neighbor," helps to clarify who "Jason" is.
Look at it this way: if you ever want to be SURE of something, you can say that you want to be POSITIVE that it is true.
