[glow=green,2,300]Purpose and Meaning[/glow]
1.Annie Dillard must have some type of intellect because she has such an intelligent mother. Therefore she is very creative and thinks logically; not just assuming what is going to happen but thinking it through. For example her mother proposes questions like “How do you know?” to make Dillard have supporting evidence to what she states is correct. If Dillard ever answered her mother with “Everyone says so.” She would be doomed. A lot of characteristics rub off from parents to their children so her mother’s precise attitude is shown when Dillard and her mother had this conversation. At the end of this Memoir Dillard says “And in fact it was always clear to Amy and me, and to Molly when she grew old enough to listen, that if our classmates came to cruelty, just as much as if the neighborhood or the nation came to madness, we were expected to take, and would be each separately capable of taking, a stand.” Proving that Dillard’s intelligent mind is greatly owed to her mother’s attitude.
2. The words that Dillard uses may seem foreign to people that have not come across these crazy phrases before. When Dillard implies the phrase “Terwilliger bunts one.” Most people that enjoy watching baseball would know exactly what this means. On the other hand Dillard’s mother hears the unique wording and asks “is that English.” Dillard’s mother cares less about the meaning but enjoys the sound of the phrase, when she blurts out “Terwilliger bunts one” at the most random moments. This makes Dillards main focus on writing this Memoir not just to speak
3. This memoir shows a unique way a mother and daughter communicate and learn from each other. Dillard’s mother emphasizes and stresses certain characteristics, which sole cause is to help her daughter grow into an adult, and bring out her individuality.
[glow=Green,2,300]Language and Style[/glow]
1. These words that are used in the Memoir are words that people do not use in their everyday language. Dillard's mother points this out by repeating the phrase "Terwilliger Bunts one." She shows this by exclaiming “is that English?” It’s obviously English but her mother’s lack of baseball mistakes the phrase as some other tongue.
2. The nouns and verbs in this sentence are there to show that a lot is going on. Not only is there “men sunk in muck to their armpits” but there is also people “hauling dredges.” If I could pick one word that would describe this sentence I would pick the word commotion, and by the verbs it explains a lot about the scene. Also the authors diction in these sentences are very easy to understand therefore any reader can comprehend exactly what the author is saying.
3. As any other author that is writing anything, it pays to be specific with certain things. When authors use great diction and detail to get their point across, the reader understands the passage in greater depth. By extending sentience’s like “Yes, you will be able to play the piano after.” To “Yes, my dear, brave woman, you will be able to play the piano after this operation.” People have a clearer picture on what is going on. This is every author’s main goal.
4. Dillard’s mother employs dialogue and personality to show her sense of humor. Everything that seems to come out of her mouth, weather she is analyzing something, or just talking seems to come out with a little twist. For example the phrase “Terwilliger bunts one” was repeated over and over again. But her personality also plays a role, because Dillard’s mother loves to play jokes and gags on people, when she goes to the amusement park and basically try’s to break up a couple.
[glow=green,2,300]Strategy and Structure[/glow]
1. Many people use the phrase like father like son, but in this case you can say like mother like daughter. Approaching things the way her mother had, is not such a bad thing. When people use a questioning mind and intellectual rigor, it gives people a good idea that this person is intelligent and thinks about things before doing them. Using these techniques makes it almost impossible to lose in an argument and shows people that what they may decipher could be wrong. Why not have intelligents like that? These characteristics most likely helped Dillard through school and made her the person she is today.
2. A name is only a name, while in my opinion it has no effect on the passage at all if she mentioned her name. The reason she uses mother throughout the passage, shows her emphasize on the word mother. This is not meant to downgrade her any bit, but shows a bigger picture that she is proud to call her mother, her rightful name; which is mother. She grew up as a child calling her mother, so why not in a Memoir entitled “An American Childhood” call her such a name? It shows the reader that using her real name would not put the meaning of mother into the passage.
3. At the end she uses that to express some characteristics that her mother would use. Sense she also carries these characteristic, she makes sure her last thought in the piece is of what she has assimilated from her mother.
