don't feel too well =(
Purpose and Meaning
1. After reading “An American Childhood,” one learns and can see the kind of person Annie Dillard’s mother really is. Dillard’s mother was a very intellectual woman, who did not believe in being the same as everyone else. She also did not feel as if it were right for her children to have the same opinions as anyone else, she wanted her children to have their own opinions based on what they knew. By raising her children this way, it made them different because they were thought to think on their, unlike most young adults who base their opinions on what others think is true. The way Dillard writes looks to be influenced by her mother. Dillard never once uses “average” words or phrases, she uses words that bring out what her mother taught her, to be intellectual, to be herself, and to not listen to anyone but you.
2. Throughout this piece, Dillard describes her mother with the words and phrases that she used to say all the time. For example, “Terwilliger Bunts One.” Dillard tells her audience that her mother would say this phrase at the most random time, without thinking twice about it. Saying this phrase randomly gave amuse to the passage, and it also separated her from people. This made her different from the people she used to be around, she was the random outspoken one, and sometimes people did not understand why she was the way she was. This also separated her children from other people too because she taught them not be to be like anyone else. Dillard uses language more than actual stories to tell her audience about her mother. By using language, Dillard expresses the way her mom uses language in her everyday life, and how this has affected the person Dillard herself has become.
3. In “An American Childhood” Dillard speaks mostly about her mother and the type of person she was. She states certain experiences which involve her mother, which portrays her as a loving, carefree person. But the main purpose of this passage, was to persuade people into believing that they can be their own person, and the only way to do this was to always stand up for what you believe in, create your own opinions, and being “capable of taking a stand.”
Language and Style
1. When all three phrases, “Terwilliger bunts one ”,“ royal Poinciana and “Tamiami Trail”, are read aloud, they all have a certain ring or certain sound to them. When "Terwilliger bunts one" is said it sounds almost harsh as opposed to "Royal Poinciana", which sounds almost peaceful. When "Tamiami Trail" is said, it seems to have a harsh but at the same time peaceful sound. Dillard's mother uses these phrases repetitively because she likes the way they sound when speaking them aloud.
2. The mixing of contrasting words and hard images demonstrates copious things about Dillard's mother. It shows that she is a well educated woman which is not expected of a woman in this time in history. Dillard's mother shows that she wants her children to be educated and wants them to be themselves and have their own opinions, she is preparing them for the future which awaits them. An example of this would be "People were stunned. She rolled deadpan and apparently effortlessly, arms and legs extended and tidy, down the beach to the distant water's edge, where she lay at ease just as she had been, but half in the surf, and well out of earshot.”
