Oliver Schopf, Der Standard, 1/8/2009 Shown in the cartoon is a man lighting off fireworks saying, "Happy New Year!" Attatched to the fireworks is a ribbon that is in the shape of the current stock market. The point where the ribbon ends is tied to the fireworks so that whenever the man lights the fireworks, the ribbon will go up, as will the stock market in the New Year of 2009. Now that 2008 has come to a close, the hope for the New Year of 2009 is that the stocks raise back up. It is traditional to light fireworks in the New Year, and that is exactly what the man is doing. The fact that the ribbon, representing the current stock market after 2008, is going down and tied to the fireworks implies hope that with the New Year the stocks will go up.
