Bob Gorrell, National/Syndicated. 12/ 19/ 08 The cartoonist has a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln juxtaposed with the governor Blagojevich of Illinois. The portrait of Gov. Blagojevich is a mug shot with the numbers on the side. The cartoon is based on the recent event where the governor was caught on tape saying the empty Senate seat from Obama was “golden”. He wanted to sell the seat, or in other words he would vote in someone to Obama’s place in return for something like money. The federal government’s issue is whether the governor’s sole right to appoint state representatives should be denied when they are corrupted. President Lincoln was named “honest Abe” because in his career as a lawyer he followed the law and was always honest. The cartoonist shows that Blagojevich is dishonest and suggests that government officials should be honest like Abraham Lincoln. Leaders are appointed to office “by the people” and “for the people”. Officials who abuse the trust and sanctity of office deserve to be punished. It is disappointing to see important leaders commit such villainous acts as selling positions. Abraham Lincoln represents the true idealism of democracy where honesty is lived.
