Vince O'Farrell, Wallongong, Australia, The Illawarra Mercury, The Melbourne Express. In this political cartoon we see President Bush who appears to be at a press conference. Bush is crouched behind a podium, ducking from a pair of oncoming shoes. As he is crouched behind the podium he says, “The boot again… that’s twice in two months.” This political cartoon pokes fun at the already hilarious event that took place at a news conference last Sunday in Baghdad when an Iraqi reporter threw both of his shoes at President Bush. Shoe throwing in Iraq is considered the severest act of disrespect, even worse than spitting on someone. However, in the political cartoon when Bush says, “… that’s twice in two months.” He is referring to the recent election of President elect Barack Obama, and how he is in the process of leaving the White House. The juxtaposition of the end of Bush’s rule as president next to the shoes being thrown at him comically relays the pun the illustrator conveys in the cartoon.
