In this cartoon there are several elves exiting from “Santa’s Shop” with pink slips in their hands. Their facial expressions aren’t so pleasant due to the fact that when one receives a pink slip from their job it means that they are fired. Also, Santa’s toy shop is very small, this adds to the implication that he no longer needs a lot of space to create toys. The sign at the top of the cartoon that reads, “Economic Forecast” is relevant because it lets the viewer know that this is what the economy has caused for Santa and his elves. The author is completely correct. It’s a shame that little kids whose parents can’t afford any presents for them will have to live with the disappointment of not only receiving a present from their parents, but from Santa Clause too. The downfall in the economy has affected everyone, whether indirectly or directly, it has in some way hurt some pockets. The recession has taken so much away from people’s Christmas spirit. It’s even affected me. Every year up until now, my family would come over my house and we would put up our Christmas decorations. But nope, not anymore, we didn’t put up one single light because my mom complained that it’ll make her electric bill too high. In the month of November alone, over 500,000 people lost their jobs due to the poor economic activity, so don’t feel alone little elves. Gary Varvel, The Indianapolis Star-News, 12/18/2008

It seems like everyone has been affect by this economic recession, even Santa. How are the parents going to explain to their kids why Santa didn't bring them any gifts?. Santa the "gift giving king" is now broke. The little elves who worked hard all year long, have now lost their jobs. But elves are not the only ones getting the pink slip. Men and women across the country are losing their jobs, making this Christmas , the worst Christmas ever. Without a job, people can't afford to spend money on gifts. They have to think about the important things like how are they going to pay the house mortgage, the car payment, or any other bills that needs to be paid.

This political cartoon portrays all too well the toll today's economy is having on everyone's holidays. It's sad to think that one cannot even put up holiday decorations for fear of a costly electric bill adding to someone's already stressed pockets. Not to mention the abundance of children whose belief in Santa may be shattered when any gifts. It's funny, usually around this time of year schools or other organizations collaborate to create gift giving events for children who have not, yet this year I have heard no such talk. I seems like there's no way to give to others when you don't have yourself.
