Eric Allie, Chicago Portrayed in this political cartoon are what appear to be a little girl and her grandmother. The two are discussing how quickly the holidays seem to come each year and how stores start putting up their decorations months before the holiday even arrives. As the young lady and her grandmother continue to complain about the stresses of holiday shopping, they progressively begin to transform into the Grinch and Scrooge, the two thoughtfully murmuring “BAH” “HUMBUG”. This political cartoon comically displays how the holiday overkill provided by department stores has turned many people into Grinches and Scrooges. Such examples are realistically given by the recent events that took place this past “Black Friday”. Scenarios such as the poor woman who worked at Wal- Mart and opened the store that faithful Black Friday morning, only to be trampled to death by anxious shoppers hoping to benefit from the day’s “once in a Blue Moon” sales. Or the two men who had a shoot out in the parking lot of a Toys R Us of all places, over what had to be none other foolishness. It’s hard to say whether or not the state of the economy is what is to blame, but surely a change for the better has come, and soon.
