Daryl Cagle, MSNBC.com, 11/21/08In the cartoon above there appears to be a bear that has been beaten up badly. On the bear's hat reads "Smokey". He has a band aid on his face, a cast on his arm and leg, and his butt is on fire. The terrain he walks on is very dry and has no vegetation. The sky is also dark and the color of smoke. Obviously the bear featured in the cartoon is none other than good old Smokey the bear. Most people know this bear as the face of fire safety, but in this picture it seems like Smokey has been beaten by the fire he tries to keep away from everyone. The cartoon refers to the enormous fires blazing in California. The fires are very dangerous and have been interfering with peoples lives. Some of the them are caused by the actual residents and i think who ever accidentally starts one of these burdens is in some deep trouble because these fires can last more than a couple hours, and some for more than a couple of days. All I can say is if you don't want to be hauled out of your house because the dry land around you is going to catch fire and ruin everything you own, then don't move to California.

Great work analyzing the cartoon, Chelsea, but your second paragraph was an extension of the analysis and contained little argument. Your reply to a classmate needed a bit more elaboration.
