David Fitzsimmons, Arizona Daily Star, Tucson AZ 11/13/08 As shown in the cartoon, the Lincoln Memorial is shown raising his arms in victory and shouting, "Yesss!". The second bubble says, "He's been like that ever since election day 2008." This shows that Lincoln was rooting for Obama to win. This is obvious because when the civil war was going on, Lincoln wanted African Americans to participate in the war and also was against slavery. This shows why Lincoln is proud to know that Obama broke the barrier and became the first African American president of the United States. The people who are observing this represent the people of the United States and are shown admiring the statue. Many Americans are happy that Obama has won and this signifies why. I am with Lincoln on this one. I definitely think that this cartoon says it all. Obama deserved to win the presidency and he should be very proud that he is the first African American president in the United States. Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. were both active in making sure that the future stopped oppression toward blacks and wanted to make their point clear to the people. As everyone in the U.S., I am looking forward to the changes Obama will make as president and as it seems, Lincoln is also excited to see this happen.

Good work, Brittany. Your analysis was clear and your reply to a classmate was elaborated and cogent. Pet peeve error in reply to classmate (try and vs. try to).
