Hartford Courant 7/25/07 In this cartoon, the usual NBA logo is shown in the center. The only problem is that there is not an NBA player on the logo; it is actually a referee. This is all due to the referee getting caught after being charged of betting on NBA basketball games which is a big deal in the sports world. I really like this cartoon for several reasons. The cartoon is very creative with the detail in the referee with the whistle hanging of his neck, the pants, short sleeved shirt, and the money being passed into his hand. Another reason I like this cartoon is because as long as I have watched sports, I always thought that the referees controlled the whole game and after all of this happened, the referees could very well have the whole game in the palm of their hands.

Wow, I had no idea that stuff like that happened. I mean, I know sumo wrestlers take bribes and what not and therefore the match is rigged, but I never wrapped my mind around referees giving one team an unfair advantage because he or she has money riding on it. The referee is more inclined to let the team he has money on slide on fouls and other detriments. That team has an unfair advantage the other team doesn’t have. That’s just really unfair. I’m not too familiar with sports, so don’t chew me out or anything, but don’t they have multiple referees on the court/field during the game? Wouldn’t the other referees notice a flaw with the one referee’s conclusion? It is terrible that things like that happen. I know, being the sister of someone who is really into soccer, that when watching her games the referee almost always makes mistakes. Like, the ball was out of bounds when it wasn’t, or fouling a player on her team when he’s let the other team’s players get away with their fouls. Not only is it aggravating, but then you have angry soccer moms screaming in your ear. Never a good thing. I’m glad that the incident was brought to the attention of the public because hopefully that scenario will serve as an example for any other referee who tries to rig the game through undue bets.

Money makes the world go round. Its crazy to understand how much people want money because they think their life will be better. In the NBA one simple call can change the game. Just goes to show you how much power these people have and the refs are using it foolishly by taking bribes from coaches and whoever it may be.

Its gets harder to trust everyone as everyday passes by. The last thing we needed to know was that referees are cheating during games. This cartoon actually made me laugh seeing the referee in the picture with his hand out collecting money. Jonathon said in his analysis, "the referees could very well have the whole game in the palm of their hands," and after this incident, i am starting to believe in this statement as well. By betting on the outcome of the game, the referee is pretty much announcing the results beforehand. Its just despicable.

Decent analysis; no argument in second paragraph. You are not to write about why you like a cartoon, you are to write an argument in response to the topic.
