Dave Granlund, 9/26/08 In the picture above there is an image of a pit bull and a pig standing with their backs facing each other both putting on lipstick. In the bubble of above them is written “Remember when politics was just elephants and donkeys?” The picture was obviously drawn to poke fun at the whole issue involving John McCain, Sarah Palin, and Barack Obama. After Sarah Palin made a joke that went somewhere along the lines of what is the difference between a pit bull and a soccer mom is lipstick , Obama was attacked by the Republican party a couple of days later for using the same expression. All of a sudden the race turns towards pigs and lipsticks. The bubble saying “Remember when politics was just elephants and donkeys?” it is just trying to say that the political race and everyone in it is so easily distracted with smaller non important issues that they do not look at the political parties themselves. If individuals were intelligent they wouldn’t let something so small sway their votes and throw them off track from what is really of any significance.

In actuality, Obama didn’t use the same expression. He said "but you know ... you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. You know, you can ... wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it's still going to stink after eight years." 1 There has been a great deal of controversy over whether or not this statement was directed towards Palin. It was not. The Republican’s outrage was "a pathetic attempt to play the gender card." 1 I completely agree with you on the fact that “the political race and everyone in it is so easily distracted with smaller non important issues.” Also the politicians misinterpret and blow things out of proportions to their advantage. They do anything and everything to gain publicity and a few more votes. It is utterly ridiculous. 1 "Obama Accuses McCain Campaign of 'Swift Boat Politics'." FoxNews.com. 10 Sep 2008. Decent work; analysis needs more elaboration.
