Larry Wright, Detroit, Michigan, The Detroit News, In this political cartoon we see a young man out with his lady friend; the setting is a gas station. The woman says to her male companion, “Oh Dewey, you take me to the most expensive places!” The gentleman then says to the gas pump attendant, “Give us a gallon of your finest no-lead,” referring to the gasoline as though it is a fine wine. However, before the attendant begins to pump the man’s gas he asks to see his wallet first, probably so that he can make sure the man has sufficient funds before he proceeds to fill his tank. This humorous cartoon is painfully very true. Now days the gas station has become one of the most expensive places around. Gasoline which once used to cost $1.50 has now reached $4 or more, placing even more of a strain on the economy and one’s already pinched pockets. Especially here in Florida with the frequent hurricanes, gas stations all over the state seem to increase their prices when a major hurricane is just a few miles off shore or headed our way. Or, the over seas nations in the Middle East who deliberately withhold a portion of their oil so that the supply will be significantly lower than the demand, thus increasing the price of gas. This strategic method unfairly creates more profit for them while simultaneously reaching into our already stressed pockets and taking more of our hard earned money.

This cartoon is hilarious. I find it beneficial to the scenario that the author used the name Dewey because Dewey, just like Richard and Peter, are names that are commonly associated with wealth. The author did a great job making his argument that gas prices are outrageously high. By making the woman so appreciative that Dewey took her out for gas, Larry emphasizes on his point that there has to be a change in the economy quick because things like this are just ridiculous and gas stations should never be considered an “expensive place”.
