Cameron (Cam) Cardow, The Ottawa Citizen, 9/18/08 This cartoon shows a portion of planet Earth. It happens to be the portion that contains the southeastern United Sates, particularly Florida, and part of the Atlantic Ocean. In the middle of the ocean, there is what would appear to be a hurricane, coming straight at Florida. The hurricane is labeled “MARKET CRISIS.” At the bottom of the cartoon, is says “THE NEXT BIG ONE.” This cartoon is meant to show that the market crisis will have an effect very similar to that of a hurricane. It will cause people to lose their home and make it difficult for people to obtain food or gas. I can’t believe that we, as a nation, are spending approximately “$720 million a day or $500,000 a minute” 1 in Iraqi, while that copious amount of money is needed right here, in the U.S. There are people without homes or healthcare, children who are not receiving a quality education due to budget cuts, and families who can barely afford their food. On the other hand, “the money spent on one day of the Iraq war could buy homes for almost 6,500 families or health care for 423,529 children, or could outfit 1.27 million homes with renewable electricity.” 1 This is utterly preposterous. 1 Lydersen, Kari. Great work, Chelsea. You don't mean "Iraqi". Pet peeve on response to classmate (I think) nullified by quality research.
